Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui has long been one of the top travel destinations in the country due to its friendly people, accessibility and natural beauty. The island welcomes an increasing number of tourists every year who come to experience the many attractions the island has to offer including five star resorts and hotels, delicious food, world-class spas and an entertaining nightlife. One of the newest trends is the emergence of the villa segment as one of the fastest growing types of accommodation, with private developments as well as larger hotel chains catering to this segment.
Private villas on Koh Samui vary greatly. Some are part of a larger hotel chain and enjoy access to common hotel or resort facilities such as food and beverage outlets, pools or recreational facilities. Others are part of a larger villa community, also with common facilities or maybe even common ownership and some are stand alone villas owned and built by private investors who're looking for a holiday or retirement home or a steady source of income through renting out the villa. Depending on the type of villa, the villa facilities and the terms under which it is rented out change.
Villa also vary greatly in terms of services and facilities. Some are like small resorts in themselves, offering everything one could wish for, from private pools and gyms to large balconies overlooking the ocean or Koh Samui's hilly interior. Some are smaller and more modestly equipped but may be in a beautiful location or close to the beach. Due to the large number of people renting villas when holidaying on Koh Samui, many villas are rented out through rental agencies, many of which also offer additional services such as staff including maids and chefs, or concierge services that can help with travel or tour arrangements.
Design also differs greatly. Some villas are constructed in a traditional Thai fashion with pointed roofs and with the use of local building materials such as hard wood or bamboo, while others are built in a more modern fashion with clean lines and lots of open space. Common for the vast majority of new villas is the fact that they are becoming increasingly sustainable in terms of design and usage and many have modern waste and water management systems in place to ensure that Koh Samui remains a clean and beautiful travel destination for many years to come.
